Aerial Rites, Franz Jantzen: At Hemphill Fine Arts to March 10

Franz Jantzen has one of the more interesting lives among Washington photographers. By day, he’s a collections manager of graphic arts at the Supreme Court. Until recently, he worked as a freelance darkroom printer for the Library of Congress, developing images from the library’s fabled archives, a gig that recently came to an end due to changing technology and demand.

Jantzen is also a fine-art photographer, one whose innovative—and painstaking—digital technique is currently on display at Hemphill Fine Arts.

I was first impressed by Jantzen’s space-bending approach in 2009, when one of his images was included in a group show at Hemphill. The 57-by-172-inch photograph portrayed a food-display table at a county fair. Rather than making a single photograph, Jantzen stitched together countless smaller ones to create the larger image.

But even more striking was the perspective: Viewers were able to scrutinize the finest details of the cornucopia as if they were hanging from the ceiling. At virtually any grid point in the photograph, you were looking straight down at the table; there was no foreshortening or subtle recession of the more distant edges.

Other artists, from David Hockney on, have toyed with stitching together many photographs into one. Today, Photoshop makes it easier than ever. But Jantzen’s use of the vertical perspective offers something bracingly new to this familiar approach.

It was so unusual that I felt compelled to ask Jantzen whether he had actually constructed some kind of apparatus to suspend his camera and move it around during the shoot. He said no. “I hold the camera out in front of me, arms more or less straight out, and aim it down,” he said. “With the camera essentially parallel to the floor, I would make a snapshot, move forward, and make another, move forward, make another, and so on, until I had gathered a straight-down view of every section of the floor.” He called it “just like a satellite mapping the earth’s surface.”

Maybe it was just the shock of the new, but none of the images from Jantzen’s current show pack quite the punch that the county-fair photograph did. Still, the solo exhibit includes a number of impressive works.

One image lingers lovingly over the floor of Loew’s Theater in Jersey City, where, according to legend, a young Frank Sinatra heard Bing Crosby in concert in March 1933 and decided to become a singer. The theater, now run hand-to-mouth by a nonprofit, shows its age in its tiniest details—worn velvet seats, heavily frayed floorboards. The most notable sign of life is the curlicue of electrical cord that meanders gracefully over the stage. Jantzen says the image took 95 hours to stitch together, and it shows.

Another image is far simpler, though still hardly straightforward—an image of a stump surrounded by grass. Seen from above, it could easily be an aerial photograph of a pool of polluted water; it takes a few glances to figure out exactly that it’s the remains of a tree.

Some of Jantzen’s finest works are meditations on art itself. Using a slightly different technique—one in which he stitches together images taken straight ahead rather than straight down—Jantzen photographs a Cézanne painting in a jumbled style that winkingly suggests cubism. In the same fractured style, he photographs a stack of packing boxes turned into art by Warhol. (The small sign that reads “Please do not touch the art” is a nice grace note.)

Most strikingly, Jantzen records a decaying display in the somewhat grimy front window of a wedding photographer’s shop, echoing Walker Evans’ famous image of photographs lining the front window of a portrait studio. In Jantzen’s version, though, the top row of color photographs in the display are in fine shape, while the lower rows devolve into an eerie, blue chemical mess overlain with ghostly human forms. One can’t help but wonder why the wedding photographer let his window display go for so long, but we’re fortunate that Jantzen stumbled into it and rescued the odd tableau from obscurity.

David Prifti, who died on November 21st, was a photographer and teacher who for the past 15 years embraced the earliest techniques of photography. Using the traditional wet plate collodion process, which was developed in the 1850’s, David made photographs of contemporary sitters and subjects that are tinged with a sweet and haunting sense of nostalgia.

Because the wet collodion process requires exposures from 30 seconds to 2 minutes time it provides powerful opportunities for a deep inspection and engagement. “My interest lies in the power of a photograph to describe my subject clearly and with power,” Prifti once wrote. “What begins with my interest in the physical appearance of the subject, develops into an evolving exploration of the sitter and myself.”

John Currin's artwork brings to mind the naturally lit rooms of Vermeer and the realistic, beautiful, yet often grotesque figures of Odd Nerdrum. What I see here are three women, obviously related, preparing a huge turkey for Thanksgiving, but the turkey is really the star. It is impossibly fat and huge, I have a hard time believing they will be able to fit it into an oven.

The first is Herbarium of Artificial Plants for which Alberto Baraya took the role of a botanical explorer and collected, catalogued and displayed artificial plants from some of the earth's most fertile places, starting with Colombia, his own native country and one of the world's most biodiverse countries. Made out of plastic or fabric, the samples are dissected and exhibited inside botanical slides that rigorously detail the false plant parts and their characteristics.
Baraya's concern is representation, not ecological critique. "A lot of people need a relationship with nature, the good feeling of nature, but they sometimes get it through artificial plants. We need the representation of nature more than the reality" (via.)

Julien Gracq is an incredible French writer who died in 2007 at the age of something incredible like 99. I think you would like his first novel, written when he was still affiliated with the Surrealists, The Castle of Argol. I have an anthology from the "View" folks (Charles Henri Ford's magazine) which is dedicated to the novel itself!

Gertrude Huston was the wife of New Directions' founder and publisher James Laughlin (they're both now dead). She designed a lot of their covers.

Naomi Savage seems to have been famous for photocopying and manipulating images, which I think is a viable form of artistic expression. Gracq and her uncle Man Ray were surely good friends, and I have no doubt she had the novel in her collection, photocopied and manipulated it. I bet she even knew Laughlin and Huston, and felt her work was an appreciation of the original book cover.

As a New Orleans native, I felt the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina personally; my family was profoundly affected by the storm. We suffered not only the loss of physical possessions but endured psychological damage as well. Four years after the storm I found my grandmother’s ruined doll collection. The dolls had been submerged in water for two weeks. I began to X-ray them both as objects to document and preserve. I was curious to see how the damage looked on the inside. I was surprised by what I found within— nails, pins, hooks, springs holding them together, lost objects, safety pins, and pieces of jewelry.The dolls have an aura that is almost human, with internal workings that chronicle a life lived, a spirit. Sometimes they have strength; others, broken hearts. Making the photographs helped me move beyond my grief. The X-rays aren’t documents of decay and loss but stories about what can be recovered and saved, what can be found, seen, and kept. It is my hope that viewing these images created from X-rays will provoke the viewer to explore the depth of their relationships and experiences within themselves and the world around them.

Douglas Prince's Particles and Waves explores the photographer's fascination with the digital world and his role as a transmitter of that world. In this work, a computer monitor replaces a viewfinder, in the service of a post-modern form of observation and image-making: The resulting images are aesthetic and profane, aloof and fetishistic.

Prince appropriates source material from a democratic cross-section of Internet images, including pornography, medical and scientific websites, and popular culture.

In his Particles and Waves series, however, there is a preponderance of nudes. The images are closely cropped, abstracted, and partially obscured by surface effects that unexpectedly heighten their eroticism. Particles and Waves 235, for instance, presents a nude female torso floating in an abstract digital space. The head and limbs of the subject are masked and blended into the background; breasts and torso emerge from a sea of digital pattern, much like Gustav Klimt's nudes emerge from swaths of dizzying surface design. Image 235 is in this way typical of Prince's fetishistic tendency to reveal and conceal, represent and abstract, in a sort of static, digitized striptease.

As high art birthed from the broadest possible source material, Particles and Waves abounds in intentional paradox. Particles and Waves 231 presents a female torso that looks like a classical Roman sculpture twisted away from us in a dynamic pose. Surrounding the figure is a ground or space that has been digitally manipulated to look like mesh or netting, studded with jagged, abstract forms and light effects. The result is both familiar and alien. We imagine a solarized photograph of a sylvan nude, stooping under foliage, her back dappled in shadows; we see a decapitated sculpture, stuck in wire mesh, surrounded by an explosion of plaster in some technological dystopia.

While the images from Particles and Waves conjure a fragmenting range of associations (contour maps, surrealist solarized photographs, classical antiquity, pornography, and even that pixilated digital file that you wouldn't dream of printing), they are grayscaled and meticulously worked to achieve a unifying aesthetic. Arguably, it is their teetering between fragmentation and unification that comprises the central meaning or duality of Particles and Waves. Theirs is an unsettling balance that somehow perfectly reflects life in the digital age.

Flickr is now hosting more than 5 billion photos/ According to the Yahoo-owned photo site, user “yeoaaron” uploaded the site’s 5 billionth photo on September 18th, 2010.. The image shows the Woodwards Collage in Vancouver, B.C. Flickr says more than 3,000 images are uploaded to the site every minute. It reached 2 billion photos in 2007. It hit the 3 billion mark a year later in 2008.
